NAMA SOLICITS MEDIA PARTNERSHIP AS LAAC DECRIES DEBT OWED AGENCY



THE Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA)has solicited the support and co-operation of the media in the area of fair and balanced reportage of its activities as the agency strives toreposition itself and sustain the gains of safe and efficient air navigation in the country. The Managing Director, Engr.Abdulsalam who stated this in a chat with aviation correspondents on Friday at NAMA headquarters in Lagos noted that the recent successful calibration exercise and the certificate of fitness issuedby the calibration team has finally put to rest insinuations from some quarters about the actual state of these navigational aids. He listed some of the gains of his administration to include the installation of two AFTN switches at the Lagos and Kano Gateways; introduction of CPDLC and Mode S Data Link asalternatives to voice communication; creation of new direct flight routings in Nigeria to reduce flight times; creation of new PBN regional routes linking Nigeria to the rest of Africa, and the establishment of coordination links between Nigeria and ASECNA among others.He also revealed that the process of deploying MLAT/ADS-B in the Gulf of Guinea is still ongoing. In his remarks at the event, the Chairman of the League of Aviation and Airport Correspondents (LAAC), Mr Chuks Iwelunmo commended NAMA for doing a tremendous job in maintaining the safety of the Nigerian airspace. While commending the agency for the recent successful calibration exercise, Iwelunmo called on all airlines indebted to NAMA to pay up their debts to enable the agency carry out its statutory obligation which according to him is “strategic to the nation’s security.”  

NAMA MD NAMED AVIATION PERSONALITY OF THE YEAR

THE Managing Director, Engr. Ibrahim Abdulsalam has been honoured as “Aviation Personality of the Year” at the 3rd Nigeria Transport Awards and Lecture held at the Sheraton Hotels, Ikeja. According to organizers of the event, Engr. Abdulsalam was selected out of an array of other contenders because of his innovativeness, professionalism, exceptional managerial skills and rare leadership potential which has seen to the repositioning of NAMAtowards enhanced productivity and efficiency. Earlier in a lecture titled “Aviation Safety (and Security) in Nigeria: The way Forward,” Engr. Abdulsalam who was represented by the General Manager (Procurement), Engr. Muyiwa Adegoriteaverred that for the safety and security of the airspace to be guaranteed, a gamut of strategies must be adopted to include training and retraining of core personnel, workforce motivation, human and technological capacity development among others. He called for the concerted effort of all stakeholders to bring about a “safe, secure, operationally efficient, market-driven, customer-focused and dynamic industry. The Nigerian Air Traffic Controllers Association (NATCA) also bagged an award as “Aviation Association of the year.”



AKPEN BECOMES PORT HARCOURT ASM
MR Gabriel Akpen, a fomer DGM Standards has assumed duty as Airspace Manager, Port Harcourt International Airport. He takes over from Mr Marcel Onwuakpa who was recently redeployed to headquarters as GM SAR. An experienced Air Traffic Controller with several ratings, Akpen is a graduate of Mass Communication from `Enugu State University of Science and Technology. He is married with three children.

U.S. Aerospace Industry generates 1.2 million jobs...nets $118.5 billion export sales

  In 2012, the U.S. aerospace industry contributed $118.5 billion in export sales to the U.S. economy.  The industry’s positive trade balance of $70.5 billion is the largest trade surplus of any manufacturing industry and came from exporting 64.3 percent of all aerospace production. NAMA NEWS UPDATE

ARAP STEERING COMMITTEE SUBMITS REPORT ...AS CHIDOKA LAUDS NAMA FOR CREATION OF PMO _THE steering committee of the Aviation Revenue Automation Project (ARAP), inaugurated for the purpose of driving the full automation of all activities in the aviation agencies on Monday submitted its report to the Honourable Minister, Chief Osita Chidoka in Lagos. Among the recommendations of the committee was the need to drive commitment and enforcement to ensure strict compliance by all stakeholders while chief executives of all agencies should be held responsible to ensure that all revenue lines are captured under ARAP platform; also that all agencies should be encouraged to establish the Project Management Office (PMO) as is the case with NAMA. Receiving the report, Chief Chidoka stated that “the power of automation especially in the dynamic world of aviation cannot be wished away as it would facilitate the one aviation vision and also set targets and measurable timelines”.
