The numbers are staggering. FlightView, a Boston-based airline data company, on Monday released a chart showing how many total flight cancellations and delays were recorded over the past three days at both of Chicago's principals airports — O'Hare International and Midway — in the wake of Friday morning's fire at the FAA's regional air traffic control center in Aurora.
At O'Hare, total cancellations for Friday, Saturday and Sunday combined reached 2,991, with the largest number, 1,517, recorded on Friday and 704 and 770 on Saturday and Sunday respectively.
Flight delays over the three days — that is, planes that departed more than 15 minutes after their scheduled time — totaled 2,467 flights with a remarkably consistent number of delays each of the three days. On Friday, delayed O'Hare flights totaled 857, with 761 and 849 recorded on Saturday and Sunday respectively.
Then there was Midway, which has a much smaller number of daily departures than does O'Hare. And the vast majority of Midway departures are Southwest Airlines flights.
The three-day tally of cancelled flights at Midway came to 636, with the largest number, 460, on Friday. Midway's cancelled flights totaled 121 and 55 on Saturday and Sunday respectively, indicating Midway was closer to getting back to normal by Sunday than was O'Hare.
The number of delayed flights at Midway over the three-day weekend total 583. But Midway recorded only 21 delayed flights on Friday, because Southwest essentially cancelled all its flights that day after the air traffic control center was shut down. Midway showed 257 and 305 delayed flights on Saturday and Sunday respectively
