A new bill introduced by Congressman John Mica, R-Fla., would privatize Air Traffic Control (ATC) in the United States, as the FAA continues to modernize the system. The proposed legislation follows a House subcommittee hearing last month in which aviation experts evaluated the private models that countries such as Canada and the United Kingdom use to oversee air traffic control. Seven people have died after a small plane crashed in the Dominican Republic. The single-engine plane came down on a golf course, killing all six passengers and the pilot. The Piper PA-32 had just taken off from Punta Cana airport on an internal flight. The pilot had been attempting an emergency landing on the course at Cocotal. The plane burst into flames upon impact, according to Hector Olivo from the Civil Aviation Institute. There had been reports that two Britons were among with dead, with the Foreign and Commonwealth Office telling Sky News they were "liaising with local authorities to urgently gather more information". However, a spokesman has now confirmed there was no one from the UK on board. The bodies, which have yet to be formally identified, remain at the scene. Civil aviation officials are investigating the cause of the crash.
The Management of the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) has assured the traveling public of steady traffic flow at airports across the country contrary to reports credited to agitating air traffic controllers at the weekend. The management of the country' s air navigation service provider, Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA), has gone into a serious negotiation with the leadership of the National Air Traffic Controllers' Association in a bid to resolve the emerging trade dispute. A statement from the agency confirmed this afternoon that "relevant authorities have been in consultation with Air Traffic Controllers on their agitation for enhanced welfare". The statement signed by the General Manager ,Mrs Olajumoke Adetona hinted " the situation is gradually returning to normal as flight operations have resumed at the various airports across the nation". The agency however,expressed regret over inconveniences caused the travelling public as a result of the flight delays.
New bins available for the 737 family will hold 50 percent more bags Boeing is showcasing its roomier luggage bins available on its 737 family of airplanes at the Aircraft Interiors Expo in Hamburg this week. Space Bins answer the call for more space to stow carry-on bags. Each of the larger Space Bins will hold six standard sized bags, two more than the large current Boeing Sky Interior pivot bins installed on many Next-Generation 737s. That allows for 194 total bags in Space Bins on a 737-900ER or 737 MAX 9, compared to 132 in the current bin configuration; 174 compared to 118 on a 737-800 or 737 MAX 8; and 130 compared to 90 on a 737-700 or 737 MAX 7. With a lower bin lip height, Space Bins provide increased visibility into the back of the bins and make bag loading even easier.
